A Conservative party leadership candidate Andrea Leadsom has revealed she smoked cannabis (weed) while at university.
The former leader of the house of Commons was reacting to questions about her past drug use following the revelation that leadership rival Michael Gove had taken cocaine.
- Mrs Leadsom, 56, said she had never taken cocaine or any other hard drug and had never smoked cannabis also known as weed, since leaving Warwick University, where she read political science in the 1980s.
In her words “I have never taken cocaine or Class A drugs,” she told The Independent. “Everyone is entitled to a private life before becoming an MP. I smoked weed at university and have never smoked it again since.”
Another conservative party leadership candidate Michael Gove has been accused of “rank hypocrisy” after the former justice secretary admitted to taking cocaine on “several occasions”.
The Conservative leadership hopeful said he “he seriously regrets” taking the drug when he worked as a journalist almost 20 years ago.
After Mr Gove’s admitted once taking cocaine, Caroline Lucas A green party MP criticized him for the policies he support as justice secretary.
From a post on her Twitter “Rank hypocrisy of minister admitting to ‘mistakes’ on drug use while backing policies that perpetuate harm. “From locking up disproportionate number of young, black men, to treating drug misuse as crime rather than health issue, prohibition fails us all.”
